Too old to rock 'n roll .... too young to die...

Gerald Brom: The Joker

Beguiling

Edward Burne Jones: The beguilling of Merlin

Give me a hero...

Edward Burne Jones:'The Briar Rose' series, I: The Prince Enters the Briar Wood

I can’t remember when
I’ve lost my faith
A day in November
She came
Bringing winter
Ice and snow with her

Now all is fake
Like careless love
Every smile has a price
To pay
Fatality
Plays with life and death

Lady of liars
Queen of winter
Dark enchantress

All what is gone
Wasn’t meant to be
So she told me!

But I am a warrior
I need to believe
Not to understand
No way
Just give me a hero
A bird of prey
A guide to follow, to obey

Lady of liars
Queen of winter
Dark enchantress

All what is gone
Wasn’t meant to be
So she told me!

Lady of liars
Queen of winter
Dark enchantress

All what is gone
Wasn’t meant to be
So she told me!

Blood, sweat & tears

Frederic Lord Leighton: The fisherman and the siren

(I love you more than you 'll ever know)

If I ever leave you
You can say I told you so
And if I ever hurt you babe
You know I hurt myself as well

Chorus: Is that any way for a man to carry on
d'you think he wants his little loved one gone?
I love you Baby, more than you'll ever know
More than you'll ever know

When I wasn't makin' too much money
you know where my paycheck went
you know I brought it home to baby
and I never spent one red cent

(Chorus)

I'm not tryin' to be
any kind of man
I'm tryin' to be somebody
you can love, trust, and understand
I know that I can be, yeah yeah
a part of you that no one else could see
I just gotta hear, to hear you say
It's all right
yeah, yeah, yeah!

I'm only flesh and blood
But I can be anything that you demand
I could be president of General Motors baby, heh
or just a tiny little grain of sand

(Chorus)

(Guitar Solo)
(Sax Solo)

If I ever leave you
You can say I told you so
And if I ever hurt you baby
You know I hurt myself as well

(Chorus)

I love you, I love you, I love you baby!
Well all right!
I told ya, so many times before
I love you
I love you!
If you don't know, then I'll tell ya one more time
I love you!
I love you!

Psychopath... love you to pieces!

Warriors

Ken Kelly: Barbarian Warrior (1979)

Here our soldiers stand from all around the world
Waiting in a line to hear the battle cry
All are gathered here victory is near
The sound will fill the hall bringing power to us all

We alone are fighting for metal that is true
We own the right to live the fight we're here for all of you
Now swear the blood upon your steel will never dry
Stand and fight together beneath the metal sky

Brothers Everywhere
Raise you hands into the air
We're warriors
Warriors of The World
Like thunder from the sky
Sworn to fight and die
We're warriors
Warriors of The World

Many stand against us but they will never win
We said we would return and here we are again
To bring them all destruction suffering and pain
We are the hammer of the Gods we are thunder wind and rain

There they wait in fear with swords in feeble hands
With dreams to be a King first one should be a man
I call them out and charge them all with a life that is a lie
And in their final hour they shell confess before they die

Love Gun

I really love you baby
I love what you've got
Let's get together, we can
Get hot
No more tomorrow, baby
Time is today
Girl, I can make you feel
Okay

No place for hidin' baby
No place to run
You pull the trigger of my
Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, (love gun), love gun

You can't forget me baby
Don't try to lie
You'll never leave me, mama
So don't try
I'll be a gambler, baby
Lay down the bet
We get together, mama
You'll sweat

No place for hidin' baby
No place to run
You pull the trigger of my
Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, love gun

Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, (love gun)
Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, (love gun), love gun
Love gun, (love gun)
Love gun, (love gun)
Love gun, (love gun)
Love gun, (love)

Lascia ch'io pianga (Let me weep)

Reginald Arthur: The death of Cleopatra

Let me weep over my cruel fate
And sigh for my lost freedom

And sigh
And sigh for my lost freedom

Let me weep over my cruel fate
And sigh for my lost freedom

May the pain shatter the chains
Of my torments just out of mercy
Of my torments just out of mercy

Let me weep over my cruel fate
And sigh for my lost freedom

You are my love

Boris Vallejo: Vampire's kiss

Away with your fictions of flimsy romance,
Those tissues of falsehood which Folly has wove;
Give me the mild beam of the soul-breathing glance,
Or the rapture which dwells on the first kiss of love.

Ye rhymers, whose bosoms with fantasy glow,
Whose pastoral passions are made for the grove;
From what blest inspiration your sonnets would flow,
Could you ever have tasted the first kiss of love.

If Apollo should e'er his assistance refuse,
Or the Nine be dispos'd from your service to rove,
Invoke them no more, bid adieu to the Muse,
And try the effect, of the first kiss of love.

I hate you, ye cold compositions of art,
Though prudes may condemn me, and bigots reprove;
I court the effusions that spring from the heart,
Which throbs, with delight, to the first kiss of love.

Your shepherds, your flocks, those fantastical themes,
Perhaps may amuse, yet they never can move:
Arcadia displays but a region of dreams;
What are visions like these, to the first kiss of love?

Oh! cease to affirm that man, since his birth,
From Adam, till now, has with wretchedness strove;
Some portion of Paradise still is on earth,
And Eden revives, in the first kiss of love.

When age chills the blood, when our pleasures are past
For years fleet away with the wings of the dove
The dearest remembrance will still be the last,
Our sweetest memorial, the first kiss of love.

(Lord Byron - The First Kiss of Love)

Heart of Darkness

Edward John Poynter: At low tide

("Heart of Darkness" novel by Joseph Conrad - Excerpt)
"He had taken a high seat amongst the devils of the land-- I mean literally. You can't understand. How could you?-- with solid pavement under your feet, surrounded by kind neighbors ready to cheer you or to fall on you, stepping delicately between the butcher and the policeman, in the holy terror of scandal and gallows and lunatic asylums--how can you imagine what particular region of the first ages a man's untrammeled feet may take him into by the way of solitude--utter solitude without a policeman-- by the way of silence, utter silence, where no warning voice of a kind neighbor can be heard whispering of public opinion? These little things make all the great difference. When they are gone you must fall back upon your own innate strength, upon your own capacity for faithfulness. Of course you may be too much of a fool to go wrong--too dull even to know you are being assaulted by the powers of darkness. I take it, no fool ever made a bargain for his soul with the devil: the fool is too much of a fool, or the devil too much of a devil-- I don't know which. Or you may be such a thunderingly exalted creature as to be altogether deaf and blind to anything but heavenly sights and sounds. Then the earth for you is only a standing place-- and whether to be like this is your loss or your gain I won't pretend to say. But most of us are neither one nor the other. The earth for us is a place to live in, where we must put up with sights, with sounds, with smells too, by Jove!--breathe dead hippo, so to speak, and not be contaminated. And there, don't you see? Your strength comes in, the faith in your ability for the digging of unostentatious holes to bury the stuff in--your power of devotion, not to yourself, but to an obscure, back-breaking business. And that's difficult enough. "

"I looked at him, lost in astonishment. There he was before me, in motley, as though he had absconded from a troupe of mimes, enthusiastic, fabulous. His very existence was improbable, inexplicable, and altogether bewildering. He was an insoluble problem. It was inconceivable how he had existed, how he had succeeded in getting so far, how he had managed to remain-- why he did not instantly disappear. `I went a little farther,' he said, `then still a little farther--till I had gone so far that I don't know how I'll ever get back. Never mind.
Plenty time. I can manage. You take Kurtz away quick--quick--I tell you.' The glamour of youth enveloped his particolored rags, his destitution, his loneliness, the essential desolation of his futile wanderings. For months--for years--his life hadn't been worth a day's purchase; and there he was gallantly, thoughtlessly alive, to all appearance indestructible solely by the virtue of his few years and of his unreflecting audacity. I was seduced into something like admiration-- like envy. Glamour urged him on, glamour kept him unscathed. He surely wanted nothing from the wilderness but space to breathe in and to push on through. His need was to exist, and to move onwards at the greatest possible risk, and with a maximum of privation. If the absolutely pure, uncalculating, unpractical spirit of adventure had ever ruled a human being, it ruled this be-patched youth. I almost envied him the possession of this modest and clear flame. It seemed to have consumed all thought of self so completely, that, even while he was talking to you, you forgot that it was he--the man before your eyes--who had gone through these things.”

(Apocalypse Now, the movie, based on this book)

Since I 've been loving you

Black clouds on the horizon...

William Bell Scott: Building a Roman Wall

Percy B. Shelley - The Cloud

I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,
From the seas and the streams;
I bear light shade for the leaves when laid
In their noonday dreams.
From my wings are shaken the dews that waken
The sweet buds every one,
When rocked to rest on their mother’s breast,
As she dances about the sun.
I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
And whiten the green plains under,
And then again I dissolve it in rain,
And laugh as I pass in thunder.
...
...
I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky;
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;
I change, but I cannot die.
For after the rain when with never a stain
The pavilion of Heaven is bare,
And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleams
Build up the blue dome of air,
I silently laugh at my own cenotaph,
And out of the caverns of rain,
Like a child from the womb, like a ghost from the tomb,
I arise and unbuild it again.

You'll never know...

J.W. Waterhouse: Circe

Look what you have gone and done
You fool
The best was yet to come
What a childish game to play
You had it all
And threw it all away

You were not the first my love
Don't kid yourself
You sure won't be the last
You have just yourself to blame
A fool's a fool
By any other name

You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know
How close we came

Nothing but the best for you would do
My love was vintage wine
Now your just a memory
You've gone from me
Just so much wasted time
You can rest assured that I won't cry
Tears where never quite my style
I stopped crying long ago
With life erased forever from my mind

You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know You'll never know
You'll never know
How hard I tried

you'll never know you'll never know
you'll never know you'll never know
We could of had it all
You'll never know
How hard I tried

Your just a memory
You've gone from me ooooo

You have just yourself to blame
A fool's a fool
By any other name

You'll never know you'll never know
Oh what a foolish game to play
You'll never know you'll never know
you'll never know you'll never know
You had it all
And you threw it away

You'll never know you'll never know
You threw it all away
You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know
You never know how hard I tried

You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know
You never know how hard I tried (how close we came)

You'll never know you'll never know
You'll never know you'll never know You'll never know you'll never know

In the Heat of the Night

Luis Ricardo Falero: Vision of Faust (departure of the witches)

Steely eyes of a silvery people
Walk behind me, with evil intent.
Up to the tower, I stand alone
Stripped of rank before a throne I am sent.

What befalls us in the heat of the night?
What befalls us in the heat of the night?

Before long, behind adamantine doors,
I taste of the wine of their joy.
Through delirium of a tortured mind
Her face gave me strength to this day.

What befalls us in the heat of the night?
What befalls us in the heat of the night?
In the heat of the night

But love deceived me, and in my despair
I recalled the ring once again
Born of Sorrow my cunning revives me,
And I took them with me enchained

What befalls us in the heat of the night?
What befalls us in the heat of the night?
In the heat of the night

All this time

Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Daydream

Now, as I had a look at you
it took a heartbeat and I knew
that the candle of my life was burning shorter.
You turned me ‘round to face myself,
to make me trust in what I am,
now, after all that I have done it makes me wonder I'm around.

Now the night has gone, better days to come.
All this time I have been afraid, it is not too late...

All this time while we talked my thoughts collided.
All this time I could have seen but I was blind.
All this time...

I thought I'd never see the day
that in myself I'd feel this way.
We are the meaning and we know. Forever different - the same.

Now the night has gone, better days to come.
All this time I have strained my mind, waiting for a sign.

Time is like a river that is running out to sea.
We can't touch the ground, so grab a blade of straw.
If you swim on waves of trust you cannot even drown,
when you hit the shores of love you cannot die...

This is not real love...

Barry Windsor Smith: Godess

George:
Don't kiss me, darling
I want you to hear the things I say
I loved you in my way
But you know I'm gonna leave you
Mutya:
The clock was always ticking
And your heart,
Yes I know your heart is always on the run

George:
I hate what I've become
But I'm still gonna leave you
And I don't think you should stay for the night

Mutya:
Baby you know that my flesh is weak
You know I simply

Both:
I cannot sleep without you
My heart has simply nowhere to go

Mutya:
Nothing to hold
Those tears you're crying

George:
Time and time again you take me back in baby

Mutya:
You don't have to make it plain

Both:
This is not real love

Mutya:
Look at us dancing baby
Let's dance and show them all
(Dance and show them all)
How close we are
The lies have worked so far
So we go on deceiving

George:
But darling don't you know the time
Baby, look at yourself, holding back the tide
Like you've got something else up your sleeve
That's why I've got to leave

Both:
And I don't think you should stay here tonight
(Baby don't you know that my flesh is weak, you know)
I simply I cannot sleep without you
But someday I'll have nothing to show
(Nothing to show)
(Nothing to show)
I've nothing to hold

George:
Oh, baby, crying
All those simple things that won't come again
Oh do I have to make it plain
This is not real love

And I said this is not real love
Mutya:
Real love
Baby it don't glisten and shine the way it used to

George:
This is not real love (real love)
Baby think of all the promises I made on the day that I seduced you
Baby don't wait for me like some angel of tragedy
I have to set you free
Darling you should be long gone, oh long gone by now
You should be with someone, someone

Mutya:
Glisten and shine
You promised me

George:
You've gotta face it woman, you ain't ever gonna change me

Mutya:
Where will I go, what do I know
About life without you
You promised me you'd never leave me, no
This is not real love

Karanti

B.W. Smith: The devil's lake

After finishing my "Grand tour" and returning home, I think the following is most appropriate for the season and one of my favorites as well...

Karanti (by N. Kavadias)

Spanish train

No, I am not in Spain (still in Italy and in Verona/Ravenna today - Romeo & Juliet ;-) ) but I felt I had to dedicate this to my friend AntoniusBloch who left a kind comment in the "Itane Mia Fora" post...

There's a Spanish train that runs between
Guadalquivir and old Saville,
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
and people hear she's running still...

And then they hush their children back to sleep,
Lock the doors, upstairs they creep,
For it is said that the souls of the dead
Fill that train ten thousand deep!!

Well a railwayman lay dying with his people by his side,
His family were crying, knelt in prayer before he died,
But above his bed just a-waiting for the dead,
Was the Devil with a twinkle in his eye,
"Well God's not around and look what I've found,
this one's mine!!"

Just then the Lord himself appeared in a blinding flash of light,
And shouted at the Devil, "Get thee hence to endless night!!"
But the Devil just grinned and said "I may have sinned,
But there's no need to push me around,
I got him first so you can do your worst,
He's going underground!!"

"But I think I'll give you one more chance"
said the Devil with a smile,
"So throw away that stupid lance,
It's really not your style",
"Joker is the name, Poker is the game,
we'll play right here on this bed,
And then we'll bet for the biggest stakes yet,
the souls of the dead!!"

And I said "Look out, Lord, He's going to win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line,
Oh Lord, He's going to win!.."

Well the railwayman he cut the cards
And he dealt them each a hand of five,
And for the Lord he was praying hard
Or that train he'd have to drive...
Well the Devil he had three aces and a king,
And the Lord, he was running for a straight,
He had the queen and the knave and nine and ten of spades,
All he needed was the eight...

And then the Lord he called for one more card,
But he drew the diamond eight,
And the Devil said to the son of God,
"I believe you've got it straight,
So deal me one for the time has come
To see who'll be the king of this place,
But as he spoke, from beneath his cloak,
He slipped another ace...

Ten thousand souls was the opening bid,
And it soon went up to fifty-nine,
But the Lord didn't see what the Devil did,
And he said "that suits me fine",
"I'll raise you high to a hundred and five,
And forever put an end to your sins",
But the Devil let out a mighty shout, "My hand wins!!"

And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you let him win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line,
Oh Lord, don't let him win..."

Well that Spanish train still runs between,
Guadalquivir and old Saville,
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
And people fear she's running still...
And far away in some recess
The Lord and the Devil are now playing chess,
The Devil still cheats and wins more souls,
And as for the Lord, well, he's just doing his best...

And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you've got to win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is still on time, oh my soul is on the line,
Oh Lord, you've got to win..."

What is a youth...

Paul Dubois: Chanteur Florentin

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.
The world wags on.

A rose will bloom
It then will fade
So does a youth.
So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid.

Comes a time when one sweet smile
Has its season for a while...Then love's in love with me.
Some they think only to marry, Others will tease and tarry,
Mine is the very best parry. Cupid he rules us all.
Caper the cape, but sing me the song,
Death will come soon to hush us along.
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall.
Love is a task and it never will pall.
Sweeter than honey...and bitter as gall
Cupid he rules us all

Have a nice vacation!

Up the heads!

Jean Baptiste Édouard Detaille : Up the heads!

Gloria!

Well now
She don't need to see the sun ahead
Don't need that help from God above
If you're losing her don't be sad
Cause she will offer you heart attacks

She's tired of problems that you caused her mind
Tired of all those lies in your freak show
Tired of being alone at night
Being the lowest cat on earth

So Gloria steps out of the prison
Gloria's no longer the wasted disco girl
you've been dreaming about

Gloria alone now forever
Gloria away in the air now
Gloria she's no longer your slave, noo

Ooh ooh ooh

It's time for you to see yourself
All the misery you brought up
Gloria's one day ahead
Watching you from the heaven's gate

She's tired of problems that you caused her mind
Tired of all those lies in your freak show
Tired of being alone at night
Being the lowest cat on earth

So Gloria steps out of the prison
Gloria's no longer the wasted disco girl
you've been dreaming about

2x
Gloria alone now forever
Gloria away in the air now
Gloria she's no longer your slave

She's no, no longer your slave
No, no, not anymore
She's no, no longer your slave
No, no, not anymore
She's no, no longer your slave
No, no, not anymore

So Gloria steps out of the prison
Gloria's no longer the wasted disco girl
you've been dreaming about

Gloria alone now forever
Gloria away in the air now
Gloria she's no longer your slave

No, not anymore
No, no, no, not anymore
No, no

Out of my control...

John Collier: Reclining Woman

The empty conversation
The coldness of your touch
The moments of frustration
That always hurt so much
The look in your eyes that seems to say
Nothing’s ever enough
Well it seems like I’ve tried every way
To give you all my love

But it’s out of my control
It’s all up to you
Yes, it’s out of my control
What you gonna do
Everything I say, everything I do
Never seems to satisfy you
So I’ll say it again, I’m gonna let you go
It’s up to you
‘Cause it’s out of my control

I’ve felt this strange resistance
To the things I’ve said and done
And I’ve tried to keep my distance
I knew there was something wrong
But without communication
Without a message from your heart
There’s only empty expectation
And a love that’s torn apart

(Ken Hensley - Out of my control)

Such a lonely little girl in a cold, cold world

Jeanny, Jeanny...

[spoken] Newsflash, newsflash...

“Official government reports...” (all in English)

Jeanny, Jeanny...

Jeanny, come, come on
Stand up please
You're getting all wet
It's getting late, come
We must leave here
Out of the woods
Don't you understand?

Where is your shoe?
You lost it
When I had to show you the way
Which of us lost?
You, yourself?
I, myself?
Or... we ourselves?

Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
Such a lonely little girl in a cold, cold world
There's someone who needs you
Jeanny quit livin' on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
You're lost in the night
Don't wanna struggle and fight
There's someone who needs you

It's cold
We must leave here
Come
Your lipstick is smeared
You bought it and
And I saw it
Too much red on your lips
And you said, “Leave me alone”
But I saw right through you
Eyes say more than words
You need me, don't you, hmmmh?
Everyone knows, that we're together
From today,
Now I can hear them, they are coming!

They're coming!
They are coming to get you.
They won't find you.
Nobody will find you!
You're with me.

Jeanny quit livin' on dreams...

[spoken] Newsflash:
In the last months the number of missing persons has dramatically increased. The latest account from the local police reports another tragic case. It is a matter of a nineteen year old girl who was last seen two weeks ago. The police have not excluded the possiblity that a crime has been committed.

Ήτανε μια φορά.... ο Διγενής

(Byzantine Knight)

Μ' άγγιξες και δε μ' ένοιωσες στα μαρμαρένια αλώνια;

I don't wanna wait

I dont wanna wait until tomorrow
I don't wanna wait another day
I don't wanna live with all this sorrow
I'll just have to find another way

Seeing as how you've kept me
Hanging around for all this time
Playing with my mind and leaving
All our love behind
But it's time for a decision
Should I stay or should I go
I need our love to grow
But there's so much I wanna know

'Cause in my heart and in my head
Are thoughts of how it just to be
But a world of memories
Is only emptiness to me

And it's not a false illusion
I can see what's going on
If the magic's really gone
Then this is not where I belong
And I ask myself the questions
That confusion seems to bring
While the answers stay so thin
Upon the ground where I begin

Wheels of fire

P.S. I had to add the girls, to complete the archetypal wheels picture...
